The Road Where Grace Found Me
Overcoming a childhood marked by Pain, Addiction, and Search for Love
We all experience setback and struggles in life that can challenge us to our very core. Some are based on the choices we made while others are thrust upon us. The question is, where do we turn in these situations. Wayside Cross Ministries offers those overcoming severe brokenness,, addiction and the setbacks in life a fresh start and the opportunity to rebuild their lives on the solid foundation of Christ. People just like Grady.

There are roads we choose in life, and there are roads we find ourselves on before we ever understand where they lead. Some roads carry dreams and promises; others are covered in shadows, shaped by wounds we never asked for and battles we never thought we would have to fight. But through every road, every valley, and every moment when we feel lost, there is a God who sees us, knows us, and is never far away.
Grady knows this truth because he lived it
His story began with pain. His parents separated when he was only three years old, and the abuse and addiction surrounding his childhood left wounds that followed him for years. His stepdad was no better.
“I was 13 years old when I learned to cook meth.”
Before he was old enough to understand why he was hurting, he was already searching for something every heart longs for — love, acceptance, and a place to belong.
But like so many who carry hidden pain, Grady searched for answers in places that could never heal him.
By the age of 13, he was already caught in addiction. For the next 22 years, meth, gangs, prison, homelessness, and running from his past became the road he traveled. Yet even when Grady was running from God, God was never running from Grady.
“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence?”
~ Psalm 139:7
The answer is nowhere.
Because there is no place so dark that God cannot enter. No life so broken that He cannot restore. No story so far gone that He cannot rewrite. Unfortunately, after 22 years of Meth addiction, and homelessness Grady had to come to a place of complete surrender . . .
When Running Finally Ends
Years of addiction eventually took a devastating toll. Grady’s body was broken. His choices had consequences. He spent two years in a wheelchair after addiction damaged his health, and even after receiving a double hip replacement, he returned to the very thing that was destroying him.
Looking back now, Grady can see what he could not see then — that God was patiently pursuing him even in the middle of his rebellion.
In Galveston, Texas, Grady found himself homeless, alone, and exhausted from running. One beautiful day while riding his bicycle along the beach, something inside him finally broke. He laid his bike down and cried out to God.
“God, take this from me.
I’m running, I’m stuck. Take this from me.”
It was not the prayer of someone who had everything figured out. It was the desperate cry of someone who finally admitted he needed help.
And God heard him.
The Answer He Never Expected
But in this case, the answer did not come in the way Grady expected.
God’s rescue rarely looks like we imagine it will.
Shortly afterward, Grady went to prison. To the world, it looked like another failure. But God was working in ways Grady could not yet understand.
Inside a jail cell, Grady met an elderly man in a wheelchair who simply wanted him to read to him. The only book they had was the Bible.
So Grady opened it.
For three months, he read from Genesis to Revelation. In this simple act of kindness, Grady, havings searched for years for a way out discovered someone had been searching for him all along.
Jesus.
“My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”
~ Psalm 42:2
God was not just changing Grady’s circumstances.
He was changing Grady’s heart.
A New Beginning Through Christ
But God’s work in Grady’s life was not finished. When he was released, the battle continued. He struggled. He relapsed. He overdosed. There were moments when he should not have survived.
But grace kept reaching.
Eventually, broken and desperate, Grady cried out again. Through his father, God opened a door to Wayside Cross Ministries. Grady knew he did not need another temporary solution. He needed the truth. He needed the power of the Gospel. He needed Jesus.
And that is what he found.
At Wayside Cross, God began rebuilding what addiction had destroyed. Through discipleship, work, prayer, and the truth of Scripture, Grady discovered that transformation was not simply about leaving an old life behind.
It was about becoming the man God created him to be.
The man who once had no home found a place to belong. This man who once had no direction found purpose. And the man who spent his life running finally found peace.
Redeemed by Grace
Today, Grady has his own place. He has a vehicle. He has a future.
But the greatest miracle is not what God gave him.
It is what God changed inside him.
“I am redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.”
Grady says
Grady’s story is not a story about how strong a person can become. It is a story about how faithful God is.
The little boy who once experienced abuse, rejection, and pain spent years searching for love and family. But through Christ, Grady discovered what he had been looking for all along.
A Father who would never abandon him, a family found through faith, and a hope that cannot be taken away. It is what God changed inside him.
Maybe This Story Is About You?
Maybe as you read this, you see a piece of your own story. Maybe you are fighting a battle nobody knows about, watching someone you love disappear into addiction, or wondering if there is any hope left. Maybe you feel like Grady did — lost, tired, and unsure if there is a road home.
But God has not forgotten you. He sees the places you hide, he hears the prayers you whisper, and He is still writing stories of redemption.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
~ Psalm 34:18
Grady’s life is proof that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace. The same Jesus who found him is still reaching for the hurting, the hopeless, and the broken.
You do not have to keep running. There is a road home. And it begins with Christ.
“I will give you a new heart and put
a new spirit in you…”
~ Ezekiel 36:26
Here, the broken pieces of their lives can be restored. With arms open wide, we say to all who come: “You are forgiven. You are loved. You are welcome here, just as you are. You are part of the family.”
From Lost to Leading Others
